Traveling Poet
02:51
|
|||
Now gather round my friends and folk,
I'll tell you who I am
I am a man who travels
And observes this Appalachian land
I'm not alone, oh yes
Sometimes I travel with a band
And I keep an eye for stories
With my guitar in my hand
I am a traveling poet
A strolling balladeer
Oh and don't you know it
I've been around the world
But now I'm here
To sing my songs for you
Before I start my stories
And move on from this debut
I must share with you some wisdom
Which I swear to you is true
When it comes to animals
I've met more than a few
And what I've learned is every one
Is as meaningful as you
Take it from the traveling poet
Take it from the strolling balladeer
Oh and don't you know it
I've been around the world
But now I'm here
I am a traveling poet
A strolling balladeer
Oh and don't you know it
I've been all around the world
But now I'm here
To sing my songs for you

Bug

Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
I know what it's like to be a bug
I know what it's like to have my very own hole I dug
Yes, I know what it's like to be a bug
I have my very own thrown rug
My very own pet slug
My very special coffee mug
When it rains I've got a plug
Yes, I'm very snug in my hole as a bug (I am a bug)
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
I know what it's like to be a bug
I know what it's like to be a bug
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
I don't like Mr. Salamander he's a thug
When he comes around I use my rock as a plug
And he tugs and tugs and tugs and tugs
And while inside my face is smug
Cause inside I'm safe and snug
With my rug, my mug, my slug
Yes I know what it's like to be bug (I'm a bug)
I know what it's like to be a bug
I know what it's like to have my very own hole I dug
Yes, I know what it's like to be a bug
I have my very own thrown rug
My very own pet slug
My very special coffee mug
When it rains I've got a plug
Yes, I'm very snug in my hole as a bug (I am a bug)
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
I know what it's like to be a bug
I know what it's like to be a bug
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?
Do you know what it's like to be a bug?

In the rivers hide things so small
That only tiny fish eat them at all
And then crayfish eat the fish
And then fish eat the crayfish
And we eat fish dish
At the mall
Everything eats everything else
Everything except for themselves
The swallows eat the bees
And the termites eat the trees
And we eat what we please
From the shelf
Your dog eats dogfood for lunch
Your cat only eats during brunch
If you said that they were pampered
That would leave questions unanswered
Where's the food from??
What's the standard??
I've a hunch
It's a world that we are rooting for!
A world that's always hungering for more!
Everything surviving
It's an ecosystem striving
Always trying to by thriving
To be sure!

Fossilized!
02:55
|
|||
The earth around me shakes
The light it is revealed
As the rhythmic tremor quakes
My capsule is unsealed
And I've traveled through a million years
My sleep was all I'd known
Now I awake and it appears
My body's turned to stone
I've been fossilized!
So many years since I've been alive
I've been fossilized!
I'm seeing the world now with modern eyes
A chisel and a tiny pick
Free me from the ground
While a brush gently flicks the earth
Showing features that astound
All the scientists don't know what to think
They were looking for the missing link
They shake their heads all of them are floored
It's another trip back to the drawing board
Now I wait from under glass
In a small white room
And people come and stare and pass
Me inside my tomb
And the scientist they seem intent
On learning all about me
They are lost in argument
Over theories of my ancestry
Wish I could tell 'em but
I've been fossilized!
So many years since I've been alive
Fossilized!
I'm seeing the world now with modern eyes

Terrarium
03:09
|
|||
Every day at noon I gather up the pine cones
And the bird keeps the tree groomed
And we have a picnic and look
Out the glass pane at the moon
So if you listen close
Then I will tell you of my home
It's small, no doors at all
In fact, it's a glass dome
I live in a terrarium
Sealed off from the great outdoors
Just me, a tree, a bird
We three could not need any more
Our ecosystem may be small
But we know that it won't fail
Because the tree makes the air we need
And takes in all the air we exhale
Just a bird and a tree
And a squirrel, that's me
We three
In our terrarium
Sometimes it rains in our terrarium
And when it rains it pours
Yes, the sun takes the water to the ceiling
And dumps it on the floor
And I hide in my tree
And the bird jumps in the tub
And the tree takes a drink
And we all think how great it is in our terrarium
Our ecosystem may be small
But we know that it won't fail
Because the tree makes the air we need
And takes in all the air we exhale
Just a bird and a tree
And a squirrel, that's me
We three
In our terrarium

Hellgrammite
02:37
|
|||
From the river bottom
Appears the looming shape
The shadow creatures lurks
Around the rocky seascape
And it waits and waits and waits
In fact, that's all it ever does
It's waiting for the day it can escape the sea
Because
It's the hellgrammite
A creature of the night
A slimy, scary monster bug
And quite a grizzly sight
With the body of a caterpillar
And a beetle for a head
He moves with ease on spider knees
And fills the seas with dread
Along it's side its grizzly gills
Keep it swift and strong
The fearful beast extends at least
A full three inches long
But inside the monster's head
He thinks no thoughts of hate
He is good! Merely...misunderstood
With no bug can he relate!
I don't want to fight these bugs, I say!
They won't give me a chance
What can I say?
I was born this way!
I only want to sing and dance!!
No bugs for me, no krill it's true
I eat no carrion
It's no scam in fact I am
A vegetarian!

Big Red Fire Ants
02:09
|
|||
Have you ever seen a colony of big, red fire ants
Suddenly exposed from their lair?
Never have I seen such panic come
From a breath of fresh air
What are you doing in there?
Should I not have turn over your stone
What are you doing in there?
All alone
Big, red fire ants
Your home is a rock
It came from the Appalachian mountains
And was brought here to mark this trail
Your home is rock
And before it was yours it belonged to a beetle
Or a beehive
Or something with a tail
Are you aware
Of the story of your stone?
Do you know the history of your home?
Big, red fire ants
Big, red fire ants
Big, red fire ants
Big, red fire ants

Salamander
02:26
|

Why hello there
Hey, why hey
I am Mr. Salamander
My first name is Alexander
I eat bugs and coriander
And live under a stone that's wedged
In the river bank by the river's edge
On my resume I say
My name is Alex Salamander
You can call me Alexander
Was in the navy, a commander
If you really want to find me
By the stream is where I'll be
I'm afraid of Owl
I'm afraid he'll nibble at me
I'm just a salamander
Yellow spots, grey body, black eyes and feet
If you pick me don't keep me too long
'Cause under my rock is where I belong
I'm a salamander
Why hello there
Hey, why hey
My wife is Mrs. Salamander
We live right here just me and her
Yes that rock there
Take a gander
And oh yes oh there
Hey, why hey
Here's my brother Lysander
He's the other Mr. Salamander
Was in the army, a commander
Now he mostly lives alone
Underneath a different stone
I'm afraid of Owl
I'm afraid he'll nibble at me
I'm just a salamander
Yellow spots, grey body, black eyes and feet
If you pick me don't keep me too long
'Cause under my rock is where I belong
I'm a salamander
